Courtenay Carrion Crown

From the eyes of Lupino "session 13"

Moon2

Our next “lead” sends us to three sister, old crones almost hags. Disgusting old creatures they care nothing for the truth and more about being in view of all the city for 5 minutes, I bet they still hope to land a husband. Narcy does his best but they are more interested in him then the truth, even if they are wrong they feel like the beast should burn. Stupid old bitches mother snickers if only they new where they where headed, I can only imagine but then again maybe I have already had a glimpse.

I ponder what the beast said as we ride out to the abandoned town, the corn fields have run rampant and its slow cutting our way through. If the beast made friend with a child maybe we need to start treating him as a child, is his mind just starting to develop or has he always been this way. Was he created to learn, or is this the reproduce of a miscalculation in the formulas and spells used to create him.

We find empty house after empty house, and then just as it seems we are alone a ghostly child trys to lure us into the cornfield where rusty traps are waiting. We dispatch the little wraith but it lacks the multiple eyes the beast had described. We continue to search looking for this hole the beasts little friend crawled into before dying, but its going to take all night with this damn corn.

At last we arrive at Lepidstadt, another day with these gypsys and I will lose my mind. I would just as soon burn this flee bag of a child to cinders as tolerate his scratching and sniffling one more night, I don’t care if mother finds him amusing she is bond to me as my servant not the other way. I should have ridden ahead and avoided the cities I hope this group distracted anyone form noticing me, I need to get away from them before we enter the city.

Goodbyes are brief and before long we are riding ahead to enter the city, it easy to find our way to the judges manor. I have only been to this city once before but it has not changed, it may have spread a bit further but the core of old cities never changes. Here I enjoy the privacy of being one of the faceless masses, no one cares who you are or where your going. Everyone avoids eye contact and does their best to ignore everyone ells, I could get used to this place.

The judge takes the chest of books, I fight the urge to ask about others but it most likely best if she dosnt know I have read them let alone spent half a month studying them. After paying us what was promised she offers up more, it appears the beast has been caught and although it is no innocence she believe that it is not guilty of the crimes it is charged off. I wonder if she has truly thought of the outcome if it is found guilty, or I could just be anxious about being put in the spot light in front of an angry mob.

We meet with the beast and its idiot defender, it appears the beast is intelligent and sentient. Strange usually golems are created for a purpose and do nothing that could be compared to thinking, my curiosity grows even more as we learn of the beasts charges. The evidence is weak and should take very little to disprove or at least call the witnesses tales into doubt.

The first charge is the murder and disappearance of some people, the beast gives us little information so we ride out to the disgusting little mud ball. Never have I seen so many inbred ignorant fools, it takes us less then half a day to have sufficient evidence. How can these people not think about and be aware of the dangers in there own environment, I bet the still leave offerings to the wildlings ever time an infant sneezes.

We arrive back In Ledidstadt in time to present what we had found, the paladin comes in handy as she sways the judges and even some of the spectators. The mood just goes further to show this as the fraud it is, weather or not the beast is found guilty its doomed, if not by the verdict of guilt then it will be by a horde of angry towns people with pitch forks and torches. I laugh to as I ponder the scene of him crushing townfolk as they try and burn him.

Gypsy wagon group

I awake in the morning to the sounds of cheers and drinking, it appears the other are enjoying a heroes welcome. I yawn and stretch before getting out of bed, I gather my things and repack my bag before leaping out the back window and floating to the ground. I pick my way through town and head towards Professors manor, now that the threat is over I want to study those books in more detail away from the preying eyes of the others.

I leave the manor twice, once to gather a scroll and once more with a few of the other to return the remaining items we did not use to the false crypt. I revel in the near 20days of uninterrupted study and rest, but before too long it is time to head to Lepidstat to carry out the final wish of the old man. I suggest to the group to secure good mounts, this journey will pass through the mountains and walking it does not appeal to me. As we gather I get a few sideways glance as I stand without a horse, I smile and call forth a stead from shadow and ash. I grin and climb on top of the horse and our journey begins.

We travel for several days before coming across I band of gypsys wagons, I adopt a quick disguise of a innocent looking farm girl and we advance. The others are a little shocked but they don’t understand the enemies I have mad in the past, better to be safe they burned alive. These are not the scarzni I feared but they are the strangest lot I have ever seen, some of their heads where 1/3 the size it should be a hairy little feral wolf child running around, a bearded women. The group seems to be upset I see several crying and the cheerful laughter and play of the children in absent. The paladin strolls up to a man who stands out as a leader, he tells us one of their member is missing she went chasing the sounds of someone in distress. She has not been seen and no one ran after to aid her, I cant help but think this is an outstanding group of cowards but he offers a magic dagger as reward.

We push off into the woods and it soon turns into a marsh, a cry sounds out and we head in the direction then it sounds behind us. A massive spider jumps through the barrier between worlds and bites me hard, I feel its poison rush through my blood and before I can defend myself a second blow sends me into the black.

I stand up and brush the sand from my robes, its warm and dark and as I look around I can see worlds circling the small chunk of floating dirt I am standing on. A figure appears in the distance standing on nothing as I begins to walk towards me, all I can make out is long dark hair and red skin… just as this world fades a pair of eyes fixate on me, one yellow one brown.

I call out circle and fight back to back!, as a wave of positive energy washes through me. I gasp for air and struggle to breath as the big spider keeps jumping in and out of reality. It takes like what seems forever but finally we deal it enough little hits to take it down, not far we find a cache of bodies. We return to the camp and give the bad news. After delivering our reward he informs us they are performers and traveling to Lepidstat as well, as they have no real fighter to defend the group he asks us if we would travel along with them.

I keep to myself and watch the other interact with the gypsys, the women seem to get along well enough but I have no interest in these people but I do enjoy not having to ride for a few days. They stop to perform here and there and I feel best to stay hidden away, I don’t mix with small towns so well.

Ghost in the machine1

Tensions build as we crawl down a short secret passage, I can taste the anxiety of the other. I am starting to think they realize they could end up being permanent residents. Blood soaks the walls in this final cell block, the smell of cold dead metallic blood puts mothers hair on end, our names start to appear on the walls and fear builds as letter after letter forms.

I have had it, flames jet forth from my fingers scorching and boiling away the blood mages magic. I smile briefly feeling smug just before the cells start to cave in, I duck under a stone ledge Hmmm maybe that was a little too aggressive. The sound of claws can be herd as a swarm of rats appear before the old dead mage appears and starts to blast us with arcane magics, the others hit him with all the deadliest tools we took from the secret vault. As I see how little affect we are having I dig out the spell book and grit my teeth as I tear a handful of pages from his book, I hear his screams just before a volley of magic missiles hits me. I scramble to duck through a door way taking shelter as I heal myself, the others keep up the assault buying me a few more seconds as I show the ghostly mage his book as I tear another handful of pages from it. He screams and disappears and I inspect the damaged book and the few remaining spells, im not sure who that hurt more after all.

We return to the wardens wife and ask her a few last questions before we show her the trinket from her husbands body. Thanking us she fades and we take a moment to breathe before starting to plan our excite. I carefully gather up her remains along with the remains of her husband, she requested that they be buried together on a hill but I feel its best to hand it over to the locals to carry out that final wish. I pause a moment and think it maybe good to have an ally on the other side of the vale but how best to contact her, no one sees as I pocket a small finger bone from Visorianna skeleton. We walk to town triumphant but tired and worn out, a short stop at the church of pharasma then off to a warm bed.

Finally,

after shedding blood and much much effort on my part we lifted the curse. We finally did it. I envy Lupino as his magical power turned out to be pretty handy. I sometime wonder if i should have stayed to the tower to learn more about magic. Naaa, I had to much fun. But something feel off about lupino. He his too secretive to have nothing to hide. I better keep an eye on him. I dont think he is gonna betray us but he may cause problem depending on what he is hiding. I just hope he is not a necromancer, that would be very troublesome.

As we come back triumphant, i can see that the hold of the splatterman was finally over. The villager seems to be more at ease and i can see an opportunity to taste the more exotic fruit of the tavern. We still have 20 days left here and i have the intention spending every one of them preaching my goddess ways… and spy on the others. I just dont trust them. The elf may be the only one that i could trust if she really is preaching Callistria. Lupino know too much on the whispering way to be “respectable” although i would suspect him to be more powerful if he was one of them. The priest will follow us until he ran out of ale and when he does, he may just leave us to die. The pally may actually be a barbarian in disgise and I dont like the way the tiger look at me when I pretend to sleep.

Regardless of with who im traveling, I have to think at our next move. It is very possible that the way infiltrated the University. We will have to be careful with our cargo. Damn old fool, why did you die?

Marauder

My stomach growls and mother snickers as the tavern wench brings us a rather limited dinner, really I think nothing off it and wander to my room to sleep. Its been a long day and night and I need rest if I am going to create any new spells, I have spent many days paying little attention to the others and only half committing to conversations as I go over the theory of spells step by step with mother.

The morning is uneventful finally they let me sleep, Narcy slips a head into my room as I unlock the last bits of information I need. I am sure he will talk to Shivera, I wonder how they will react when they realize what I am. The steps creak one by one as I make my way down to eat, the sound fades out as voices become louder then the steps. I can here them talking about the land turning, cows giving sour milk eggs rotten as soon as they are laid. I am starting to suspect someone with talents similar to mine is behind this, blighting a land is no small task but certainly within the scope of power of a small coven of even the weakest witches.

The group ties a rope ladder this time and make our way to the lower levels, other then the usual slamming of doors our way down is unhindered. The first floor seems somehow less hazy, but I venture to guess that it is simply we have been noticed now. I dare not hope that we are making progress, spirits have a nasty habit of returning if not dealt with properly.

I set up the spirit board, tracing out a large circle and marking down a pattern of protection symbols. At last I see a use for this trinket, with possible passages and no real leads. Maybe the board will attract a weaker spirit that will be less able to evade my question. I request Narcy to join in the circle and take Lakmars place although he refuses, I grow suspicious of his fear of magic and the unknown I will have to test him later and see how deep his fear runs.

No sooner then a heartbeat after I have asked my question the big HalfOrc drops to the ground convulsing and twitching, Mother laughs and questions his faith and willpower I cant help but question it myself. As a few of his companions attend to him I contemplate the names of the two passage, reapers row and the nevermore. Knowing the severity of both men’s crimes I conclude they would not house two dangerous men in the same wing and decide that splatter man was most likely held in the wing called the nevermore. Both where murderers but magic users seem to catch a harsher punishment whenever the law can make an example of them. Fear is a powerful motive and the peasants do fear those with arcane power, yet love those with divine gifts. I almost laugh aloud as I contemplate this for a moment, power given is less frightening then power gained through study, patience and hard work. I suggest we head down reapers hold and get little arguments from the rest, Lakmar does not seem to be shaken he is tough I will give him that.

I get a glance through the door of a small guard room, three skulls dance around attacking as a body on the floor animates. Its easy to recognize the marauders ghost, the dwarfs corpse drops back to the floor soon after rising as the last of the small skulls is destroyed. I grin glad I didn’t have to waste any spells on such a minor mad spirit. Perhaps Pharasma will take a piece from his skull to fill the void missing in his wives, right before she casts his soul into hell.

I approach the wardens body, describing how he was killed and tortured to the others as I examine him close looking for what Visorianna asked for. If we can get her a symbol of his station maybe she can weaken the last of the ghouls. Just as soon as I have found it his skeletal hands animate and attack me, sharp claws tear at me chocking me preventing me from casting a spell. They are short lived and quickly beaten down, I am truly starting to hate this place.

Quickly we cleaned out the armoury, no sense in not getting paid for this job.

So I happen to catch Lupino keeping a journal. How dare he, if something happen, only his point of view will be known. Does he think we are not good enough? Never mind that, if Lupino keep a journal, so will I.

Kendra

Haaaa Kendra. She is as acurate than beautiful when it come to Tarot. The foreign merchant is very acurate as of the nature of my exchange busyness with others. Then came the divination and as always Kendra slip in this universe of knowledge and look through us, through me. I felt bare when she looked at me as if there was no barrier, no mask. I got distracted by her eyes and the corner of her lips, looking softly tempting but the intensity of her stare took me by surprize. I remember her as a child, so innocent. There was no innocence at that moment, she know too much to stay the professor little girl anymore.

The townfolk are warming up to us, especially the ladies. They probably herd of my little exploits and want to try first hand. Anyway, dont know if there is much time for that. we have a goal and this goal is the prison. We are also running out of time. We need to press on and I think everyone realize that.

As we get back to the jail, i feel this aura swallowing us as if we are cut from the rest of the world. Even the animals know better than staying in this place, excepty for the tiger of course who is stupid enough to follow the druid. I’m not much better, i’m following the last will of a dead man.

As we enter the ruins, i try to take my mind of the task at hand by watching the rear end of the elf. As she push forward I can’t help but notice how strong her legs are. She does carry herself pretty good despite what await us.

As we get to another part of the jail, we confront a skeletton with no head. It was kinda funny to watch until Lupino get almost hack in half by a single swing. As the battle continued, more of us got wounded badly.

As we push further we encounter a wight or a wraith. Not sure which as i was to busy to avoid being hit than listening to the cleric. My weapon was just not drawing any blood from that thing. Than someone threw an arrow for me telling me to use it. Don’t know what it was but it worked. Between me and the fighter we took it down. We took care of another of the infamous five but at a price. We all half dead and exhausted. I guess its time to go back in town and lick our wound or let someone elso do it for you.

Someone suggests checking on Kendra and Lackmar wishes to go the church so I take the opportunity to retire to the professors library to consult with Mother on a new spell, she sits in my lap as I stare into her eyes. I feel the world shift and a rush as the cosmos surround me, I walk with her through a field on a distant plane we pace around a massive stone and she shows me where the secrets to this spell lie on its surface. There are so many marks it takes me what seems like hours to find the right set of marks as I trace the symbol over and over until its burned into my memory.

The door opens and everything swirls and spins as the library comes back into focus, the Elf stands at the door watching us. I don’t move a an inch as I try to claw back through the portal to the place I just was, after a moment or two Shivera withdraws and as the door clicks closed a sigh in aggravation and pet the tiny wolf sitting in my lap.

I stumble across an entry in a book and it reveals all I care to know about the final inmate, his wife was his first kill. Why would the concentrate the worst criminals in Ustalav here?, there must be a reason other the convenience. Damn these old countries and there secrets, paranoia and repeated changes in leadership have made tracking history almost impossible when its something they didn’t want known.

I watch Kendras slender fingers handle the cards of the harrow deck as she runs through an all to familiar performance, I take my turn and draw my card. Before I even turn it over mother is laughing at me, the card reads “The Idiot” and she cackles and tells me to let that serve as a reminder that I play with powers beyond my grasp. I am amazed at how many cards fall to important positions, Kendra is indeed a skilled diviner and her news is as good as any harrow reading could be.

I love sunsets, I hope this isn’t the last one I see. Chatter is minimal as we march towards the prison, this walk seems longer everyday we come up here. They ask what happened the day before when I fainted I suppose and I am informed that the fathers ghost has not been since I awoken, I wonder if they ask out of concern for themselves or my on well being. Nothing has changed and we make for the hole in the training yard, the climb looks like it should be simple enough and we are all shocked as we watch Narcy tumble into the darkness. Shivera fallows with similar results and I hesitate, two green glowing half burnt ghosts emerge from the water and close in. I drop down into the hole and am rewarded with a rending blow, I hex the thing and use some of my power to mend the Elf as I crawl to safety.

The darkness and oppressing force is staggering down here, and the restless dead wander the falls. We fight our way down to the oubliette and are confronted by the loppers ghost, it brutally assaults us and only the hand axe Shiver has seems to have any affect. Olivia’s fire magic seems to have no affect and as I use my power to enlarge the elf I draw an arrow from her quiver and throw it to Narcy.

We are exhausted and the darkness and cold stone are closing in on us, we head back to the Outward in with a few more items in our collection. I grit my teeth as we march and favor my injured leg, I can still feel the burning pain caused by the headless flaming skeleton. Shivera has been speaking to the others I can tell, they don’t trust me although I feel they want too. I will protect them as long as they stay in line, and if they don’t well lets just hope they do Mother chimes in.

200px stirge

Father Charlatan take to following me as we wander the upper floor of the prison, I cannot see him but I am assured by the paladin he is there. Great just what I needed, I can feel mother on edge as she maintains a low growl with her hackles up.

Strange flute music fills the old halls as a group of skeletons reanimates, I here Narcy cry out about stirgis my heart slows and I feel a piercing cold shot through my chest as the world goes black.

The world comes back into focus as I open my eyes, its mid day I think and a young priest looks down at me. I don’t like him I know that already, he tells me my friends felt me here and moved on and I have just been brought back from the dead. I takes me a moment to focus, I can still feel mother but I cant here her. Impossible I say as I give an arrogant answer to hide the truth. When I die I will not be returning so easily, not with the deal I made. The more he pushes the angrier I get, there is no way the could have banished all the spirits in Harrowstone without me. I hit him with a chair and to my surprise he stabs me in the chest with a fragment of the chair, the pain cuts through me and for a moment I almost believe that I was wrong assuming this wasn’t real. No! its impossible, I tear the splintered chair leg form my chest and drive it into the priests throat. I smile as I watch him bleed out gasping for air, the blood leaves beautiful patterns on the stone mosaic floor.

The sound of combat awakes me, I stand and jump to action healing those who need it. I laugh to myself, I knew there would be lost without me. The music persists as we continue to explore, Narcy breaks into an attic door with the help of Shivera and the paladin. I surprise myself how well I can swing a weapon, as the giant bugs body crunches under the weight of my mace. I curse and regret not gathering more acid as a headsmans Scythe assaults us, the damn thing is made of steel and my companion lack the strength needed to sunder the metal. We grapple it and wrestle it to the ground and the paladin smashes it until it cracks. What a barbaric place this must have been, an axe is swift and one would never see the death blow but a scythe must be used on a level of up angled curve. No wonder this place is haunted, every inmate would have had to watch that curve blade descend and level out before there head went toppling to the ground.

I start to question the value of this spirit board as we set up to ask another question, I center myself as I demand to know who killed the professor. As the curser slides around and spells the wardens name I fight smashing the thing to bits, damn these gypsy boards no more reliable the Scarzni that make them.

The others realize the name being spelled out is that of the wardens wife, after the whispering way to care of the wardens spirit they have left his dead wife to be a feast for the splatter man as he gains strength. I wish I could find some secret in his spell book to help us defeat him, but if there are any secrets they elude me.

We camp out and wait in the bushes around the memorial hoping to catch someone in the act of defacing it, the only we witness is the night life of the local teens and witness our rouge loose all control of himself. I have never meet a follower of Calistria that couldn’t control themselves, perhaps its because he is a half breed. Still I wait until the elf carves his heart out for embarrassing he Goddess. I get out of my bush just long enough to curse the fool, just as I utter the last sounds of the chant mothers voice bellows in my head and she denies my power from taking hold. No doubt I will be scolded for days about this, but she is right I must learn to better control my powers if she is to trust me with greater powers.

Charlatan

The local lawmen are more inept then I fear, and us taking on the job to solve the problems of late has led them believe I give two coppers about their daily problems. Shortly after I awake and am enjoying breakfast with my companions a deputy burst into the Outward Inn to inform us someone has tossed more blood on the old memorial to the prison guards. I really do fail to see how petty vandalism is any concern of ours but I follow the rest, mother laughs and snickers as a few of the others seem to lose their appetites at the mention of blood.

I glance around the area at the memorial and after a few moments we discovers something beyond the obvious “S” written on the memorial, I take a pause and recall that the “splatter man” man used to spell his victims names in blood. I chuckle this clearly dosnt cut down the number of targets being as I travel with three S’s. I stay to the middle of the pack as we follow a discreet trail of blood droplets, and there at the end is a dead dog. I pause and sigh, its not even human blood and the locals are freaked out how pathetic.

The little druid picks up another trail, she seems to be a lot more useful then I first thought. She is wise and clever in the wilds despite her size, Mother agrees but still wont trust her big cat. I can see a man working in the field and I recognize him from the mob that didn’t want the professor buried, what a bastard if he is the dog killer and vandal….. I start planning curses to ruin an old fool. I tip too quietly and confidently up to the front of the house and just on the side of the rail I am shocked to discover a bloody war razor and a flask that was filled with blood, either he is an idiot or something isn’t right here. My nerves are perfectly calm and flat as I open his door and duck inside followed by the druid and rogue, the inside is nothing more then a simple hovel and here I was hoping for a blood soaked alter to some dark god or the void. mother notes my disappointment and I creep out of the place, I am well clear when I her a squeak and the man working in the field turns is attention on us. Fine since the cover is blown I confront him and press the cocky old bastard about the items, between his history as a fighter and knowing the grunts are bread to be strong and loyal not smart I quickly dismiss him as a suspect. I turn around after walking away a short distance and warn him to move closer to town, not out of any obligation I feel towards him but if he is now or later become possessed I would really rather not have to kill him.

I am becoming more comfortable with a few of the more harmless haunts, but I still feel as if something is breathing down my neck in this place. I can smell burning flesh in my mind and mother is on edge as we enter the infirmary. As we gather whats left of suppliers in here a spirit starts to hurl items at us, the miserable thing in intangible and I know we are going to need magic to harm it. I quickly whisper a plan to the half orc and we lure it into a small room where his divine gifts do minor harm to it before the paladin smites the damn thing with one of the undead bane arrows we found.

Everything that was used on the inmates here seems to have some life of its own now, I light up a pair of straight jackets with my magic before the damn things chokes me out. I grumble as I am revived, this is the second time I owe my life to these people. Narcy makes short work of the locks this time, well short work only in the sense the her manages to open this time. In a storage room behind a secret door I am delighted when we find a stash of items that belong to the most notorious, at least I breath a sigh of relief now if we can only figure out how to use theses against their former owners and settle this place down again.

I smile flipping through an old spell book finding spell I will teach to mother to draw on later when it the ledger I see my name appear in blood before vanishing, I snap the book closed and try to put it out of my mind. Shivera has been playing a pipe all the while and I look up in time to witness her playing like mad before someone tackles her. Blood can been seen running a line down from her ears, and I start t wonder if these are going to cause more harm then good.

In the upper floors we discover cells and the body of Father charlatan bond with many chains, leg irons and heavy iron balls. We untie the chains as his ghostly for appears, I rack my brain trying to figure out how to force his spirit to move on but every attempt fails. I grow more annoyed as the light starts to fade and night creeps up on us.
